Work History

Post-Doctoral Fellow in Deep Reinforcement Learning for Drones Navigation

KTH
07.2023 - Current
  • Company Overview: KTH Royal Institute of Technology, a leading technical university in Sweden, known for its research and education in engineering and technology
  • Website: www.kth.se
  • The goal of this project is to use computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) methods for the analysis of turbulent flows around complex geometries
  • To this end, high-order spectral methods will be employed to perform both well-resolved large-eddy simulations and direct numerical simulations, in order to assess the influence of the relevant flow structures
  • We are also interested in using deep-learning methods to further understand the impact of the simulation parameters on the results and to effectively design novel strategies for optimization and control of the flow, together with developing an optimal navigation path which will be also using real-time data, coming eventually from 5G networks
  • I am interacting with several related projects dealing with large-scale turbulence simulations, deep learning and experiments
  • Furthermore I have access to the multi-penta scale supercomputing facilities available at KTH, in conjunction with the Swedish e-Science Research Centre (SeRC, www.e-science.se)
  • Finally, I am part of the excellent research environment FLOW (www.flow.kth.se) and part of a multidisciplinary research team with extensive experience in data-driven methods and sustainability.
  • I am also working on novel applications of explainable AI in the fields of turbulence and Large Language models, which can represent the future of how we will conceive AI in the next years.

Research Engineer in Liquid Propulsion Rocket Engines

AVIO S.p.A.
01.2023 - 06.2023
  • Company Overview: AVIO S.p.A
  • Is a leading aerospace company specializing in the design and production of propulsion systems for space launch vehicles
  • The main task is the design of injection systems and combustion chamber for liquid propellant rocket engines, both for practical industrial applications and for R&D purposes
  • The work is focused on the development and testing of the new family of injectors and injection plates for the upper stage engines of the future European launcher VEGA-E, fed with cryogenic propellants
  • Preliminary design is ongoing, based on previous experience and results of numerical simulations
  • The second project is DISCO, part of the Horizon 2030 funding program
  • It focuses on the development, design and testing of a subscale combustor which will be produced with additive manufacturing techniques
  • AVIO S.p.A is a leading aerospace company specializing in the design and production of propulsion systems for space launch vehicles

PhD Student and Research Engineer in Combustion Instabilities in Liquid Propellant Rocket Engines

DLR - German Aerospace Center
08.2016 - 12.2022
  • Company Overview: DLR is the national center for aerospace, energy and transportation research in Germany
  • Website: www.dlr.de
  • Numerical Modelling of the acoustic response of cryogenic oxygen/hydrogen rocket flames
  • The goal of the thesis is to study the response of a cryogenic flame under acoustic forcing
  • The focus of my thesis is the study of the phenomenon in the frame of high frequency combustion instabilities which affect liquid rocket engines and can even lead to the failure of the entire system
  • The study is conducted through numerical simulations (CFD), in particular the in-house code TAU and COMSOL Multiphysics
  • DLR is the national center for aerospace, energy and transportation research in Germany
