Status: Submitted to Nuclear Physics B, June 2025
Abstract:
This study investigates how machine learning can be leveraged to predict student dropout in higher education using demographic, socio-economic, and academic data. Six ML algorithms including Logistic Regression, Random Forest, and Naive Bayes were evaluated for their predictive performance. Logistic Regression achieved the highest accuracy (AUC 89.5%). The SHAP analysis revealed early academic performance, parental education, and age at enrollment as strong predictors of dropout. Findings support the use of interpretable AI models for early intervention strategies, aiming to enhance educational wellbeing and promote sustainable student outcomes.
