Conduct daily patient rounds and ensure continuity of care for pediatric surgical patients, assist in major surgical procedures and independently perform minor surgical interventions, act as a consultant for other departments by providing surgical assessments and recommendations for pediatric patients, manage pre- and post-operative care at the pediatric surgery ward, participate in night and weekend on-call rotations to provide continuous surgical coverage, and contribute to the efficient functioning and coordination of the pediatric surgery department.
Conducting research on Hirschsprung's disease within the European Reference Network for Inherited and Congenital Anomalies (ERNICA). Projects focus on international clinical practices, outcome data analysis, the development of European guidelines and diagnostic and treatment strategies for Hirschsprung's associated enterocolitis (HAEC). Responsibilities include study design, data management, international collaboration, and scientific writing and publication.
Responsible for coordinating multicenter studies across Europe to improve data collection and quality of care in rare conditions in Pediatric Surgery. Lead the development and revision of disease-specific datasets, oversee data quality evaluation, and facilitate collaboration between surgeons, researchers, and patient representatives. Actively involved in scientific committee discussions, study design, and strategic planning.
Rotating through the wards of Abdominal, Oncology, Pediatric, Trauma, Hepato-biliary, and Vascular Surgery with responsibility for the pre- and post-operative management of patients, including the treatment of complications. Additional work in the Emergency Department as a surgical resident, managing A- and B-trauma cases according to ATLS protocol, assessing post-operative complications, and performing minor procedures such as wound care.
Worked independently under supervision of medical specialists, managing patient care on the ward. Acted as a key point of contact for patients, families, nurses, and consultants. Responsible for clinical assessments, including history-taking, physical examination, and formulation of differential diagnoses and treatment plans. Performed ward-specific procedures such as blood sampling and venous access.
Worked with the Acutelnes student research team, responsible for screening, inclusion, and collection of clinical data for multiple studies. Led a research line focused on improving the understanding of clinical judgment in acute care settings.
Assessed acutely ill patients across various medical specialties. Responsible for diagnostic work-up, treatment planning, and documentation. Performed ward-specific procedures including blood sampling, venous access, and arterial blood gas punctures.
Completed 4-week rotations in General Surgery, Orthopedics, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Pulmonology, Emergency Medicine, General Practice (Huisartspraktijk van Tuijl, Paterswolde), and Rehabilitation Medicine (Revalidatie Friesland).
